Trip out Friday with this killer teaser video produced two years ago by my pals @jprezant @joshyjawnson and @ericsilv3r - they came up to shoot and interview on the evening of the second last day of install of what would be my crowning achievement to date. This complex “living art installation” was a wink to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. The underbelly of the cultural revolution of the late 60’s US, the moon landing, and the darker elements behind psychedelia brought this multi sensory experience to life. If only we had served brownies, we would have hit all the senses! This experience was an absolute blast and made me feel like a rock star. What fun like this I long to have again.
Special shout of to Tom for engineering that giant wheel, John and Carl... the floral outlaw Mark, Sonya, Ritchie, Anne, Nevada, Alizah, Kayley, Jeremy, Kelley... if I forgot to mention you I feel like a dope, but you know who you are. It’s a really odd time of year to not be totally

It’s a really odd time of year to not be totally consumed with the events at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. There aren’t rooms to book, trucks to rent, order forms to fill, and on and on. For 20 years the Philly Flower Show has been a massive outpouring of creative energy. I really miss the smell of the bobcat exhaust and the mulch. I miss the coffee runs and working 14 hour days. I miss the laughs and the hugs with many people I only see once a year if I am lucky. Planning is happening for the rebound flower show which will be outside at FDR park in June, but it isn’t helping me miss my people any less, and the family that alway came in for the show.

The photo is from the 2018 show, which was a first for me to approach on my own, responsible for everything... not just as a designer and set fabricator. I partnered with Mark and he brought Sonya into the fold. The team of young artists grew and 3 of the young ladies in this image returned to assist each year since. I miss them and enjoy seeing their growth from afar. My good friends Tom, Carl and John have stories for years, after some of the most unusual load-ins. I thank Dan for the photography from this year. I thank my wife for continuing to allow me to make the most unusual visions manifest (often right outside our back door). I wish my flower show family the very best and can’t wait till it’s safe to give and get those hugs.

I have evolved since I was 2, when I asked my moth

I have evolved since I was 2, when I asked my mother aloud why a woman at the mall had “crayon on her face”. My first in-person encounter with a person of color began a lifelong exposure to the story of early Americans who never initially asked to be a part of this country. From the early school studies of the slave ships to the teen leadership events at YMCA’s throughout the Cincinnati area, I gained experiences and friendships that helped inform a perspective on the black experience, from my own white bubble. I don’t speak from the impossible posture of never having pre-judged people based on their appearance, but after having such emotional responses to films like Amistad, and American History X, my 20-something self began realizing the little that there was to debate. There is no room for naïveté when it comes to the original sins of this country, or how they echo within our society still.

Years ago when I was creating a mural for a Mosque, I was reminded by the architect, that a 21 year old Chinese-American woman designed the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. I took note of that experience when being honored with the opportunity to design and paint a mural for the @walnut_street_ymca , right here in Delaware. I am honored to have incorporated the likes of black Americans from all fields of contribution to American life. I want them to inspire youth, and create conversations for years to come. In remembrance of our past failures to see that we are all created equal, to the late John Lewis and the honorable Madam Vice President Harris. Entertaining excerpt from an interview between Hotel Impossible host Anthony Melochiorri, and Roxbury Experience owners Gregory Henderson and Joseph Massa. This excerpt focuses on the "gentleman" (me) who painted the Terrazza of the Titans cottage ceiling mural between Dec. of 2018 thru Spring 2019. Melchiorri relays how witnessing the labor intensive process of painting this mural partially convinced him that the owners had "lost their effing minds". The Roxbury is located in the Catskills of New York.

I was blessed to be commissioned by #discovercard to paint a 100 foot long corridor at the @walnut_street_ymca right here in Wilmington. The design follows a chronology that starts with the indomitable #harriettubman - I started the mural with her, and made sure to wrap with her, here on my final day.

On a winter Monday morning in 2016 I was awoken by my wife to terrible news. It was January 11th. 5 years ago today was the last day on earth for David Bowie. It’s not as if I knew him, had met him, or ever even corresponded with him, but the loss of such a profound creative force left such a vacancy. I grappled with it for over a week, and aside from my family, I couldn’t really share or explain why without appearing to tap into celebrity melodrama.

I was in art college in ‘95 and already a big fan of @nineinchnails and I remember reading about him joining with Bowie for a tour. Like every other beating heart on earth, I already knew the jukebox catalogue of the man, from the punk boot thumping Jean Genie to the 80’s crooner Let’s Dance. So I was in my local CD music swap store and among the new release shelf was his latest album Outside in a cardboard gatefold case. I can’t remember where I was headed, but I popped the disc into my little ‘88 Honda Civic hatchback and was transported somewhere else. It was a concept album that would end up being a throwaway by many die hard fans, but to me it was an introduction. A few short weeks later I saw the movie Seven (and was blown away), and in the credit crawl at the end played The Hearts Filthy Lesson from the new album. The crawl traveled backwards down the screen to further disorient the viewer. This has a profound influence on my art. Profound.

Over 20 years later, while the complexity of the new title track Blackstar was circling in my creative brain, he was gone. No warning, no grieving while he was still alive, no memorial or service. He turned his final album and subsequent death into the way he lived his life. Thru a work of art. I am glad he wasn’t around to witness transition and frequent turbulence of the past 5 years, but I long for his creative prowess still.

The last mural I did before the US changed forever was in NYC on March 3rd, 2020. I drove up to the city in the early am and spent the day in @macquariegroup in midtown. I worked as the business hipsters came and went, paying me little attention. In NYC, performance art and active fine art is as common as the carrier pigeon. Things were starting to get a little strange and there was a surreal amount of hand sanitizer stations thru out the building. I purposefully avoided the typical immersion in the city on typical work trips, but never thought that #newyork was about to endure the lion’s share of COVID’s first wave. Nine months later this unearthed GoPro footage might as well feel like 10 years ago, so the film noir effects and the flapper tune feels spot on. This is... Lunch Rush.

Happy December Everybody. 2020 is almost over and we can all take a deep breath (under our masks) and get ready for a whole new year. I was dragged by my family to Longwood Gardens to witness the holiday lights (an annual affair), and at this moment, when taking this very photo, I realized the beauty in it. #longwoodgardens really is a pretty fantastic place to live so close to. The beauty in this single uplit leafless tree seemed a bit of a metaphor for the past year. Minimal and surrounded by darkness, all the while looking like the upside down circulatory system in a human lung. Deep breaths and Happy December.

I am often commissioned to build strange and crazy things, but when I brought this elephant armature home (from the 2018 Philadelphia Flower Show) burning the organic materials that were woven into the welded metal structure was the quickest way to remove them. I only realized how bizarre this must look to my neighbors who may have been watching, as I set the elephant on fire, and stood there filming with one hand, and with a readied garden hose in the other. As I browsed some archived images to post, this seemed most appropriate, given the political climate, the state of our country, and the protests. Just gonna leave it there.

As a muralist, one can only strive to create works

As a muralist, one can only strive to create works that match or meet everyone’s expectations, but there are unexpected moments when you paint something, and you realize that you nailed it. I had a few of those moments when creating last year for @theroxburyexperience , and this one was worth a share. This asteroid detail is part of the larger upstairs suite for “Galileo’s Gate”, one of the tower cottages at the Stratton Falls property. You literally shower and sleep (and even use the toilet) in deep space. Unidentifiable Objects abound in the #Bowie inspired universe. To top it off, there are 3 stages of lighting effects including UV and glow in the dark paint effects. Check out their page and book a Covid-safe getaway. These folks are my friends and they just had a CBS news spread about their business. I am beyond proud to have played a role over the many years.
